LA NUOVA VIA DELLA SETA AEROSPAZIALE: La Cina sfida il monopolio occidentale

From exercises in Qatar to global co‑production agreements: China’s geopolitical and commercial offensive to build a defence ecosystem alternative to the West’s     In mid‑May 2026, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired a report destined to draw the attention of international defence analysts. In the segment, later picked up by Asian media and the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) community, Beijing claimed that the Chengdu J‑10CE fighter had achieved a “9‑0” result against an unspecified “advanced European aircraft”, comprising five close‑range dogfights and four beyond‑visual‑range (BVR) engagements .   Although the Chinese state network did not officially name the countries involved, most OSINT analysts linked the report to the “Zilzal‑II” bilateral exercise held over Qatar in January 2024, between Pakistan Air Force (PAF) J‑10CEs and Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) Eurofighter Typhoons. The exercis...

LODD Autonomous: The Desert Pragmatism Challenging the Sky

While the global discourse often fixates on futuristic air taxis for passengers, in the United Arab Emirates, a more concrete, strategic, and quiet vision for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) has taken shape: cargo logistics. Leading this revolution is LODD Autonomous, which is proving how rapid execution, combined with bold technical choices, can transform a startup into a potential leader in autonomous air logistics.

The Birth of a Systemic Project

Founded in 2023 in Abu Dhabi by Rashid Al Manai, with the institutional backing of Faisal Al Bannai, LODD is no exercise in improvisation. In just two years, the Hili prototype went from the drawing board to its maiden flight (November 2025 in Al Ain). This speed of execution is no accident; it is the result of an ecosystem determined to make the UAE the world’s laboratory for regional autonomous logistics.

The Technological "Dual Track"

LODD’s success lies in its ability to distinguish between immediate operational needs and long-term ambitions.

  • Pragmatism for Emerging Markets: Currently, LODD utilizes a piston engine as a range extender coupled with electric propulsion. This is a winning choice for operations in the Middle East and Africa: the technology is mature, maintenance is manageable even in regions with fragile infrastructure, and performance (up to 700 km of range) ensures real-world utility where hydrogen fuel cells or rapid-charging networks are not yet viable.
  • The Forced Evolution Toward Europe: To access Western markets and meet the rigorous EASA standards, LODD has already charted a transformation path. Integrating hydrogen fuel cells will be the natural evolution to achieve zero emissions, while a radical redesign of the electronic architecture based on criteria of dissimilar redundancy and compliance with global safety protocols (such as DO-178C)   will become the true benchmark for the brand.

Beyond Flight: An Adaptable Platform

LODD Autonomous presents itself as a "two-faced" company:

  1. Towards the South and Africa: A pragmatic partner capable of offering heavy-payload solutions (250 kg) in environments where time-to-market and mechanical reliability are paramount.
  2. Towards the North and Europe: An aspiring technology leader laying the foundations to integrate hydrogen and advanced flight control systems into its design.

The Verdict: Towards 2027–2028

With initial deliveries planned and preliminary agreements already in place including a collaboration with Emirates SkyCargo LODD is not just building an aircraft; it is redefining air logistics. The true strength of this enterprise lies not merely in creating an eVTOL, but in designing a platform capable of evolving with the market.

While the piston engine is opening doors in the African continent today, hydrogen and next-generation electronics will be the keys to conquering the highly regulated skies of the future. The technical pragmatism of today is the solid foundation upon which the vision of tomorrow rests.
