LA NUOVA VIA DELLA SETA AEROSPAZIALE: La Cina sfida il monopolio occidentale

From exercises in Qatar to global co‑production agreements: China’s geopolitical and commercial offensive to build a defence ecosystem alternative to the West’s     In mid‑May 2026, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired a report destined to draw the attention of international defence analysts. In the segment, later picked up by Asian media and the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) community, Beijing claimed that the Chengdu J‑10CE fighter had achieved a “9‑0” result against an unspecified “advanced European aircraft”, comprising five close‑range dogfights and four beyond‑visual‑range (BVR) engagements .   Although the Chinese state network did not officially name the countries involved, most OSINT analysts linked the report to the “Zilzal‑II” bilateral exercise held over Qatar in January 2024, between Pakistan Air Force (PAF) J‑10CEs and Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) Eurofighter Typhoons. The exercis...

THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIXThe Baykar-Piaggio Era and the Outlook for Italy’s New Aerospace Hub

The skies over Villanova d’Albenga are once again a symbol of rebirth. After years of administrative uncertainty and silence in the production departments, the acquisition of Piaggio Aerospace by the Turkish giant Baykar Technologies  formalized in 2025  opens an unprecedented chapter for the national industry. This is not merely a rescue operation, but the potential birth of an Italian-Turkish aerospace hub with global ambitions.

THE GENESIS OF A CHALLENGE (2023-2025)

The crisis at Piaggio Aerospace highlighted a painful paradox: a company with iconic products and engineering excellence, yet lacking the financial muscle required to compete in modern markets.

Baykar, a world leader in the UAV (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles) sector, identified Italy as a strategic gateway to EASA certifications and NATO standards. The operation was closely monitored by the Italian Government through Golden Power regulations, ensuring the protection of employees and intellectual property. The final piece of the puzzle arrived with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Leonardo, which now stands as the technological and industrial guarantor of this transition.

THE CORE OF THE PLAN: POTENTIAL PLATFORMS

While the future is still being written, the memorandum outlines development scenarios that could redefine Italy’s role in the global defense and business aviation landscape. These prospective directions include:

1. The Relaunch of the P.180 Avanti EVO

The icon of Italian design the world’s fastest turboprop could see a second youth. The integration of next-generation avionics and advanced communication systems provided by Leonardo would open new market segments in the executive, government, and vital MedEvac (emergency medical transport) sectors.

2. The P.1HH Hammerhead (UAV MALE)

The drone project derived from the P.180 airframe, which remained on standby for years, now appears as one of the most concrete prospects. Combining Baykar’s expertise in remote control with Leonardo’s ability to integrate mission systems and satellite data-links, the Hammerhead could become a benchmark ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) platform for the NATO area.

3. A New UCAV Family

The true technological frontier is represented by the potential creation of a next-generation tactical platform, resulting from a joint venture between Baykar and Leonardo. In this scenario, Italy would contribute critical expertise in cyber-security and integration with Western command centers, while Baykar would provide its proven know-how in combat drones.

A NEW INDUSTRIAL IDENTITY

2026 does not mark the finish line, but rather the start of a complex journey. Italy retains its engineering and manufacturing heart in Villanova d’Albenga, while Turkey finds an elite operational and certification base in Europe. The market now glimpses the possibility of a third major player capable of engaging on equal terms with global giants.

The P.180 taking off from Liguria today carries more than just passengers or sensors: it carries the ambition of an industry that, through strategic alliances and engineering logic, aims to reinvent itself to build the future of flight.
