LA NUOVA VIA DELLA SETA AEROSPAZIALE: La Cina sfida il monopolio occidentale

From exercises in Qatar to global co‑production agreements: China’s geopolitical and commercial offensive to build a defence ecosystem alternative to the West’s     In mid‑May 2026, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired a report destined to draw the attention of international defence analysts. In the segment, later picked up by Asian media and the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) community, Beijing claimed that the Chengdu J‑10CE fighter had achieved a “9‑0” result against an unspecified “advanced European aircraft”, comprising five close‑range dogfights and four beyond‑visual‑range (BVR) engagements .   Although the Chinese state network did not officially name the countries involved, most OSINT analysts linked the report to the “Zilzal‑II” bilateral exercise held over Qatar in January 2024, between Pakistan Air Force (PAF) J‑10CEs and Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) Eurofighter Typhoons. ✈️ January 2026: The World’s Sky Between Innovation, Regulation, and New Alliances

The first month of 2026 offered a rich aeronautical panorama full of strategic signals. From Europe to Africa, through Asia and the United Kingdom, the sector has shown how resilience and innovation are now the driving forces of a global transformation.

🌍 Africa: Ethiopia Emerges as an Air Power
On January 23 in Bishoftu, Aviation Expo 2026 took place, where Ethiopia presented new Russian Yak-130 trainers and Orion drones. This event marked the culmination of a modernization process that began in 2024 with the acquisition of Su-30K fighters and Turkish Bayraktar Akinci drones.
Ethiopia is thus positioning itself as one of the most advanced air forces on the continent, opening scenarios of cooperation and training that could redefine regional balances.

🇮🇹 Italy: Infrastructure and Training
The month was marked by the inauguration of the new Malpensa T2–Gallarate railway line, a decisive step to integrate rail and air transport and strengthen the competitiveness of Lombardy’s main hub.
At the same time, the Italian Air Force celebrated the awarding of the Wings to the cadets of the “Grifo VI” course, surpassed 1,000 flight hours with the new T-345A trainer, and inaugurated the 72nd Wing in Viterbo as a helicopter flight school.
These investments confirm Italy as a laboratory of training and human capital in the sector.

🇫🇷🇮🇹 France–Italy: Space as the Frontier
The €16.5 million contract signed by Thales Alenia Space for the LISA mission marks a historic milestone: the first space observatory dedicated to gravitational waves.
A project that strengthens the link between aerospace and scientific research, with technological repercussions also on air transport and the industrial supply chain.

🌏 Asia: Restructuring and Preparations
In Malaysia, the group Capital A Berhad (AirAsia Group) completed the transfer of its aviation branch to AirAsia X Berhad, consolidating long-haul operations and strengthening competitiveness in regional transport.
In Singapore, preparations are underway for the Singapore Airshow (February 3–8, 2026), with a focus on sustainability, Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), drones, and space. The event is confirmed as a key platform for new transcontinental partnerships.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Sustainability and Autonomous Regulation
The British government announced a £43 million investment plan for sustainable aviation projects, with the goal of bringing the sector to net zero emissions by 2050.
At the same time, from January 1, 2026, new drone regulations came into force, with a weight threshold set at 100 grams for registration and a regulatory approach independent from European rules.
The UK thus confirms itself as a laboratory of regulatory and technological innovation.

🇺🇸 Americas: Business Aviation and SAF
In the United States, the business aviation sector began preparations for NBAA BACE 2026, while attention grows toward Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and predictive maintenance, themes that will have global impacts on the supply chain.

🔑 Conclusion
January 2026 showed an aeronautical sector in full transformation:
- Africa emerges as a new military and technological hub.
- Europe invests in infrastructure and training, while space becomes a shared frontier.
- Asia restructures and prepares major networking events.
- UK accelerates on sustainability and autonomous regulation.
- USA pushes on business aviation and green fuels.

The sky of 2026 is not only a theater of flights and innovations, but a global ecosystem where politics, technology, and training intertwine, opening new opportunities for cooperation and development.
