The Flight of the Tricolore: Between National Pride and the Weight of Responsibility
For those who live and breathe the aeronautical sector, the Frecce Tricolori are not just an aerobatic team; they are a living symbol of excellence that blends engineering, discipline, and extreme courage. The 313th Acrobatic Training Group, officially founded on March 1, 1961, at the Rivolto airbase, has transformed flight into a unique form of choral art. Ten pilots nine in formation and one soloist fly in millimetric symbiosis, supported by a ground crew of one hundred specialists. Mechanics, engine experts, and avionics technicians form the backbone of this team, ensuring that every takeoff occurs in absolute safety.
The technological history of the team is a crescendo of Italian mastery. From the first F-86E Sabre, through the iconic Fiat G.91 PAN, to the legendary Aermacchi MB-339 PAN, which for over forty years drew the Italian flag across the world's skies. Today, as of September 2024, we are witnessing the historic transition to the Leonardo M-346 Master, a digital twin-engine jet representing the future. Yet, this path toward perfection has been marked by indelible wounds. Memory inevitably returns to Ramstein in 1988, where a mid-air collision between three aircraft caused the loss of pilots Nutarelli, Naldini, and Alessio, along with dozens of spectators, rewriting global safety regulations forever. More recently, the 2023 Turin-Caselle tragedy, triggered by a bird strike, struck the heart of the nation.
My sense of kinship with these "brothers of the sky" is felt even more deeply in light of the tragedies that have marked 2025. I think with profound grief of the accident in Poland, which occurred during an airshow rehearsal, and the latest dramatic crash at the Dubai airshow involving an Indian display team aircraft. These events, which claimed the lives of professionals with thousands of flight hours, confront us with a brutal reality: at 800 km/h, there is zero room for error. A minor miscalculation or a technical unforeseen during an acrobatic maneuver leaves no escape, even for the very best.
These tragedies often fuel sharp controversies. Many protest the high economic cost of airshows, calling for funds to be redirected to healthcare or education; others raise doubts about environmental impact and civilian safety. These are legitimate critiques in a modern society, but for those of us in the industry, the Frecce remain a symbol of unity. Honoring their history means recognizing that flight remains an extreme human challenge. Including these shadows in the narrative does not diminish its value; rather, it celebrates the heroism of those who, knowing that at such speeds no mistake is permitted, continue to fly to honor our flag and the memory of fallen colleagues across the globe.
